Charting Last Week (12/21 - 12/24/15)

The Daily Leading Index was unchanged at 4.00%. The Daily Coincident Index is at 2.67%. The Daily Leading Index page on the tab above is updated daily during the week.
Stock had their best week in over a month; bond prices were mixed for the week. The charts below show the normal trading ranges for various indices for the last six months. I have updated the charts to include all of the asset classes that I track. The red (or green) area indicates 2-3 standard deviations above (or below) the normal 21 day trading range. The gray area indicates 1-2 standard deviations above (or below) the normal 21 day trading range.
The Leading Indicator for International Developed Markets (EFA) increased by 0.03% percentage points to 1.57%. The Leading Indicator for International Emerging Markets (EEM) fell to 2.86%. Charting Last Week (12/14 - 12/18/15)

The Daily Leading Index increased by 0.78% percentage points to 4.01%. The Daily Coincident Index is at 2.86%. The Daily Leading Index page on the tab above is updated daily during the week.
Stock prices were mixed while bond prices were slightly down for the week. The Fed finally raised rates by 0.25% last week, the first rate hike 9 years. The charts below show the normal trading ranges for various indices for the last six months. I have updated the charts to include all of the asset classes that I track. The red (or green) area indicates 2-3 standard deviations above (or below) the normal 21 day trading range. The gray area indicates 1-2 standard deviations above (or below) the normal 21 day trading range.

Charting Last Week (12/7 - 12/11/15)

The Daily Leading Index decreased by 0.12% percentage points to 3.23%. The Daily Coincident Index is at 3.14%. The Daily Leading Index page on the tab above is updated daily during the week.
Stock prices were down across the board while bond prices were mixed the week. The Fed is expected to raise rates this week during the Fed's policy meeting on December 15-16. Most analysts are talking about a rate hike of 0.25%. However, The Fed Fund futures are implying a rate hike of .125% if the Fed does raise rates. It looks like the Fed will raise the target from a range of between 0% and 0.25% to a range of 0% and 0.5% (from a midpoint of 0.125% to 0.25%). The Fed Fund futures are implying a second rate hike of 0.25% by June of 2016. The charts below show the normal trading ranges for various indices for the last six months. I have updated the charts to include all of the asset classes that I track. The red (or green) area indicates 2-3 standard deviations above (or below) the normal 21 day trading range. The gray area indicates 1-2 standard deviations above (or below) the normal 21 day trading range.
The OECD released their Leading Indicators for most major countries on Tuesday. 11 of the 20 countries in the Developed Markets had decreasing Leading Indices. The Leading Indices decreased for 7 out of 15 countries in the Emerging Markets. The Leading Indicator for International Developed Markets (EFA) decreased by 0.15% percentage points to 1.54%. The Leading Indicator for International Emerging Markets (EEM) rose to 2.87%. International Leading Indicators - December 2015

The Leading Indicator for International Developed Markets (EFA) is at 1.67% and is 0.45% percentage points lower than last month. The Leading Indicator for International Developed Markets (EFA) has now fallen for three months in a row after rising steadily for nine months in a row. The Leading Indicator for International Emerging Markets (EEM) rose to 2.77%.

The OECD released their Leading Indicators for most major countries on Tuesday. 11 of the 20 countries in the Developed Markets had decreasing Leading Indices. The Leading Indices decreased for 7 out of 15 countries in the Emerging Markets. When available, I have averaged the indicators with the Conference Board's Leading indicators to create a composite for each country. I created Leading Indicators for International Developed Markets (EFA) and International Emerging Markets (EEM) by weighting each country's growth rate by the market share of each country's stocks in the respective funds. On the last chart below, you can click on the blue and red buttons to see the Leading Indicator growth rate and an ETF for various countries.

Charting Last Week (11/30 - 12/4/15)

The Daily Leading Index decreased by 0.07% percentage points to 3.34%. The Daily Coincident Index increased to 3.14%. The Daily Leading Index page on the tab above is updated daily during the week.
Stock prices were mixed for the week while bond prices were mostly down for the week. A strong enough jobs report is clearing the way for a rate hike this month during the Fed's policy meeting on December 15-16. Most analysts are talking about a rate hike of 0.25%. However, The Fed Fund futures are implying a rate hike of .125% if the Fed does raise rates. It looks like the Fed will raise the target from a range of between 0% and 0.25% to a range of 0% and 0.5% (from a midpoint of 0.125% to 0.25%). The Fed Funds futures are implying a 79% chance of a rate hike this month with an implied rate of 0.22% (a change from a 78% chance last week and an implied rate of 0.22%) according to data from CME Group's FedWatch tool.
